Our purpose is to provide interaction between Science Technicians; promote ideas and solutions to practical problems; facilitate Professional Development sessions and a support network and encourage the exchange of information with other scientific groups. Our support network also includes access through our own list server.

We offer Full Membership to those employed in an Independent Western Australia School as a Science Technician; Associate Membership to those who are not employed in a Secondary School or College, but are performing a similar role in an educational environment and have no other means of support and Affiliate Membership to schools that do not, as yet, employ a Science Technician. This enables Science teachers who are fulfilling the role of Science Technician to access to our support network.

Our four 2015 Professional Development meetings included the history, safety, construction, operation and fun of rocketry; the opportunity to attend CONASTA, the largest national Science conference which was presented in Perth this year, where Technicians had an enormous choice of relevant sessions; information regarding the STEM concept now being introduced into schools; a fire safety and emergency response session presented by a professional company and finally attending STAWA’s Future Science at Curtin University where we attended various cutting-edge science workshops. Our thanks go to the 2015 host schools: Tranby College, Mercedes College and Wesley College and to the Science Teachers’ Association of WA (STAWA) for their ongoing support.

The Association was founded in 1990 and we usually meet on the last Wednesday in each term in various host schools throughout the Perth metropolitan area.  Our membership as of December 2016 was 186 members from 105 schools and instititions. The membership fee is $60 per school, per year and this covers meeting attendance for up to 4 Technicians per school. The schools pay the fee, not the Technicians. For more information see our ‘Contacts’ link.
