Our purpose is to provide interaction between Science Technicians; promote ideas and solutions to practical problems; facilitate Professional Development and a support network and encourage the exchange of information with other scientific groups. Our support network also includes access to our list server operated through ‘Edna’.

We offer Full Membership to those employed in an Independent Western Australia School as a Science Technician and Affiliate Membership to schools that do not, as yet, employ a Science Technician. This enables Science teachers who are fulfilling the role of Science Technician to access to our support network.

The Association was founded in 1990 and we usually meet on the Wednesday in the last week of each term in various host schools or other interesting venues throughout the Perth metropolitan area.  We are an informal and friendly group.

Our four 2009 Professional Development sessions covered a visit to the Perth Hills National Park Centre; presentations on electrical tag testing from an Inspector from WorkSafe; handling gas cylinders and microscope servicing; updates on the Science Technicians’ National Survey; ideas for better time management; an overview of a science stock control system; Forensic Science kits to detect synthetic blood and fibres and a visit to Curtin University’s new Chemistry Precinct. Our thanks go to Peter Moyes A.C.S and Kolbe College for hosting our meetings during 2009.

As of December 2009, membership was 161 from 89 schools. The Full Membership fee is $40 per school, per year and this covers meeting attendance for up to 4 Technicians per school. The schools pay the fee, not the Technicians. For more information please see the ‘Contacts’ link.
